Calculations: Ideal Body Weight, Body Mass Index and Creatinine Clearance

04-30-2008

Ideal Body Weight (IBW)

  • IBW = expected weight for a patient of a given height. Used to determine:
  • -Calculated creatinine clearance (using Cockcroft-Gault formula)
  • -Drug dosing
  • -Monitoring weight for stable patients both on or not on ARVs
  • IBW calculations below based on Devine Formula for men and Robinson formula for women.
Ideal Body Weight Table

                        IBW (kg) for:

Height (m)                Male                Female

1.52                            50                        45.5

1.55                            52.3                     47.8

1.57                            54.6                     50.1

1.60                            56.9                     52.4

1.63                            59.2                     54.7

1.65                            61.5                     57

1.68                            63.8                     59.3

1.70                            66.1                     61.6

1.73                            68.4                     63.9

1.75                            70.7                     66.2

1.78                            73                        68.5

1.80                            75.3                     70.8

1.83                            77.6                     73.1

1.854                         79.9                     75.4

1.88                            82.2                    77.7

1.90                            84.5                     80

1.93                            86.8                     82.3

1.95                            89.1                     84.6

1.98                            91.4                     86.9

2.00                            93.7                     89.2

Body Mass Index (BMI)

  • Use BMI to help determine need for nutritional supplementation or therapeutic feeding. Requires both height and weight. Calculate based on actual body weight of the patient using following formula:
  • BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2
Calculated Creatinine Clearance (CrCl): Cockcroft-Gault equation

  • Men: CrCl = (140-age) x IBW (kg) / (0.815 x serum creatinine [umol/L])
  • Women: CrCl = (140-age) x IBW (kg) x 0.85/ (0.815 x serum creatinine [umol/L])
  • If unable to perform creatinine, specimen should be sent to nearest facility where test can be performed.
